Allantoin - an alternative to urea?

Allantoin: The Multi-Talent in Skincare

Allantoin: The Multi-Talent in Skincare

You’ve probably heard of the well-known ingredient Urea, but are you familiar with the multi-talent Allantoin? Learn more about what Allantoin is and how it works wonders in your skincare products.

What is Allantoin?

Allantoin is originally a plant-derived metabolic product found in the cell sap of plants such as comfrey, wheat germ, and horse chestnuts in high concentrations. Over 2000 years ago, these plants were known for their healing properties, although people at the time didn’t realize that Allantoin was the active ingredient. They used the plants themselves instead of extracts containing pure Allantoin. Today, Allantoin is also synthetically produced.

How Does Allantoin Work?

Much like Urea, Allantoin is known for its wound-healing, skin-smoothing, and cell-regenerating properties. However, its moisture-retaining effects are slightly less potent than Urea’s. Allantoin can help soothe skin irritations and is generally considered highly tolerable for most skin types.

Additionally, Allantoin has a keratoplastic effect, meaning it can soften hardened skin cells, loosen keratinized layers, and support the flow of skin oils. This makes it especially beneficial in skincare products for oily and blemish-prone skin. It also promotes cell turnover, supports cell renewal, and calms the skin effectively.
