While wearing face masks was already a common sight in Asian cities before the coronavirus outbreak, it still feels surreal in Germany even a week after the mandatory mask policy was introduced in certain areas. But how did masks become a routine part of life in Asia?
“In China, it’s everyday life; more and more people wear them. And now, during the pandemic, it’s mandatory.”
That sums it up. But was it always like this in China?
Even in China, there was a time “before masks.” So how did wearing masks become so widespread? The origins of face masks for the general public in Asia can actually be traced back to Japan, with a serious historical event as the trigger—one that even some of my Chinese colleagues had forgotten: the Spanish Flu of 1918-1920. Back then, people were already advised to use masks for protection. With every subsequent epidemic, mask usage became more popular.
So, in Asia, people wear masks to protect themselves and others, right?
My colleague laughs and admits: “Actually, very few people wear them for that reason. If it’s a young woman wearing a mask, it’s 90% likely not about protection. For older people with masks, you might think: okay, they’re probably sick.”
Over time, masks in Asia have evolved beyond protection against colds, viruses, pollen, and fine dust. Among younger generations, they’ve become a genuine fashion trend. And why not? They’re practical: no one sees the scar on your chin, you can skip makeup, and masks now come in various colors and styles, turning them into a fashionable accessory. In mangas, characters often wear masks, gradually normalizing their presence in daily life. In Japan, there are even scented masks with hints of bergamot or rose. It’s easy to forget the serious reasons behind them!
“Now, during Corona times, it’s different! Everyone is trying to protect others as much as possible—not least because it also protects themselves.”
