  • Some older filters (e.g. oxybenzone) have been under discussion for years — strict limits apply in the EU. If you're unsure, look for modern filter systems and short, easy-to-follow INCI lists.

Which Sunscreen Suits Which Skin Type?

A short, honest guide — without absolutes:

  • Sensitive skin prone to couperose or redness: Mineral protection is often the gentler choice. Products with zinc oxide also have a calming effect and don't unnecessarily burden the skin barrier.
  • Mature skin with an anti-ageing routine (retinol, peptides, AHA): Here, daily sun protection matters more than the choice of filter. Retinol and fruit acids make skin more light-sensitive — high UVA coverage is crucial. If you tolerate chemical filters well, you'll benefit from the light texture under make-up.
  • Dry skin: Focus less on the filter type and more on nourishing companion ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides. A sunscreen with built-in care saves a step in your morning routine.

Reapplying, Amount, Everyday Life — the Most Underrated Detail

Mineral or chemical: real protection stands or falls with the amount applied. For the face, the rough "two-finger rule" applies — two finger-lengths of sunscreen from the tube. Most women apply noticeably less — and thereby fall well short of the stated SPF. Reapplying after 2–3 hours outdoors, after swimming or heavy sweating isn't a nice-to-have either — it's a basic requirement for reliable protection.

Another point many overlook: UV radiation is still active under an overcast sky, and UVA rays pass through window glass. Look for the "UVA" seal in a circle on the packaging — it guarantees a minimum ratio of UVA to UVB protection.

Can sunscreen alone prevent pigmentation spots?

No sunscreen can reliably promise to fully prevent pigmentation spots. However, it makes a decisive contribution to reducing their formation and deepening — especially combined with targeted active ingredients like niacinamide or vitamin C.
