What We DON'T Promise: Why Honest Skincare Doesn't Need Miracle Claims

TL;DR: Honest skincare doesn't promise overnight miracles, "wrinkle-free in 7 days" or healing promises for skin conditions. It tells you clearly what an active ingredient can realistically do, over what timeframe, and who it's suited for. At RAU, we deliberately avoid exaggerated advertising promises – because trust matters more than a quick promise.

You've probably heard it before: "Irons out wrinkles." "Instant lifting effect." "Visibly younger in a week." The beauty world is full of promises that sound too good to be true – and usually, that's exactly what they are. In this article, we're turning things around. Instead of telling you everything our products can do, we'll explain honestly what good skincare shouldn't promise. Because brands that communicate realistically don't need to lure you in with miracle claims.

The miracle promises you read everywhere – and why they disappoint

Advertising thrives on superlatives. "The best serum of all time", "revolutionary", "visibly younger in days". Claims like these raise expectations that hardly any product can meet. And when the promised effect doesn't show up, you feel let down – rightly so.

The problem is structural. In the EU, cosmetics are allowed to care for the skin and support its appearance, but they are not medicines. A product that actually "healed" a condition or permanently "restructured" the skin would legally no longer be a cosmetic at all. Even so, a lot of advertising copy sits right on that line – or over it. The result: inflated expectations, disappointment, and eventually a cupboard full of half-empty jars.

We believe there's a better way. Honest communication is part of what we understand as clean cosmetics – just like our deliberate avoidance of certain preservatives or transparency about the ingredients on the INCI list.

What skincare can really do – and what it can't

Before we get to our deliberate non-promises, it's worth taking a realistic look at what skincare products can actually achieve. Well-formulated cosmetics can supply the skin with moisture, help its appearance look smoother and better cared for, support it against external stressors, and noticeably improve how the skin feels. With continued use, the complexion can appear more even over the course of several weeks.

What skincare can't do: it doesn't replace medical care, it doesn't stop the natural ageing process, and it doesn't work overnight. Active ingredients such as retinol or fruit acids need time and consistency before effects show – typically several weeks. Knowing this helps you shop more mindfully and stick with your routine, instead of switching products in frustration after three days.

What we at RAU deliberately DON'T promise

For us, transparency means drawing clear lines. Here are the promises you will deliberately not find with us:

No "wrinkle-free" and no fountain of youth

Wrinkles are part of a lived-in face. Skincare with active ingredients such as retinol or peptides can help the skin look smoother and plumper – but no one can honestly promise you that wrinkles will disappear permanently. That's why we talk about a well-cared-for, fresher appearance, not rejuvenation at the push of a button.

No healing claims for skin conditions

Pronounced skin problems such as severe redness, persistent blemishes or very irritated, demanding skin belong in medical hands. Our products can gently care for and support skin that is sensitive or prone to redness – but they don't claim to eliminate a skin condition. If you're unsure, seeing a dermatologist is always the right first step.

No "instant" miracles

A pleasant immediate feel is possible. A real change in the appearance of the skin is not – that takes time. That's why we give you realistic timeframes instead of "overnight".

No invented seals and pseudo-evidence

We don't advertise with vague buzzwords when there's no solid claim behind them. We'd rather explain the active ingredient and its known properties – and leave the decision to you.

No greenwashing

We are an active-ingredient cosmetics brand, not certified natural cosmetics – and we say so openly. We explain the difference in our article Vegan vs. Natural Cosmetics. On the topic of microplastics, too, we'd rather communicate specifics than green buzzwords.

How to spot honest skincare

You don't have to be an expert to tell serious communication apart from exaggerated claims. These pointers can help on your next purchase:

Honest brands name realistic timeframes ("after a few weeks of regular use") instead of "instantly". They use qualifying language such as "can help" or "supports", because skin reacts individually. They disclose their ingredients and explain them. And they avoid scare tactics to sell you something. If a product instead throws around guarantees, superlatives and before-and-after miracles, a healthy dose of scepticism is warranted.

A good first step towards honest skincare, by the way, is actually knowing your skin. Our skin type finder helps you with that, instead of blindly following the next advertising promise.

Our products: honestly formulated, clearly communicated

What does honest communication look like in practice? A few examples from our range:

The Hyaluronic Plump & Glow Serum supplies the skin with moisture and can help it feel plumper – a moisturising serum, not a wrinkle filler. The Bakuchiol Sensitive Day Cream relies on bakuchiol as a gentle alternative for sensitive skin that doesn't tolerate retinol well – without claiming it's "exactly the same". Our Retinol Serum can help support the appearance of mature skin, but it consistently belongs in your evening routine – with sun protection during the day. And the AHA Tonic with mild fruit acids can gently refine the skin's appearance if you give it time. The Niacinamide & Astaxanthin Roll-On with niacinamide is something we communicate as exactly what it is: an uncomplicated skincare product for on the go.

What all these products have in common: we tell you what they're meant for – and what they're not. You can find out more about individual active ingredients at any time in our active ingredient lexicon, for example on retinol or silver.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't RAU promise fast results?

Because honest skincare needs time. Many active ingredients only show themselves after several weeks of regular use. Promising an "instant miracle" would be dishonest – we'd rather give you realistic timeframes so you stick with your routine.

Can skincare really remove wrinkles?

No. Skincare products can help the skin look smoother and better cared for, but they don't remove wrinkles permanently. Anyone who promises that is overstating things. A fresher, more even appearance with continued care is realistic.

What do advertising buzzwords like "dermatologically tested" mean?

Such terms aren't consistently protected and, on their own, say little about actual effect. We deliberately avoid such buzzwords and instead explain the properties of the ingredients so you can judge for yourself.

Does skincare help with pronounced skin problems such as severe redness or blemishes?

Skincare can gently accompany and support sensitive or blemish-prone skin, but it doesn't replace medical care. For persistent skin problems, a dermatological check-up is the right path.

How do I recognise exaggerated advertising promises?

By guarantees, superlatives ("the best of all time"), "instant" promises and before-and-after miracles. Serious communication uses qualifying words such as "can help support", names realistic timeframes and discloses the ingredients.

Is RAU a natural cosmetics brand?

No, RAU is an active-ingredient cosmetics brand and communicates that transparently. We rely on effective ingredients and avoid greenwashing. We explain the difference between vegan cosmetics, natural cosmetics and active-ingredient cosmetics in a dedicated article.

Please note: this article is for general information and does not replace individual advice. How your skin reacts to individual active ingredients varies from person to person. If you have a skin condition or persistent complaints, please consult a dermatologist.
